Full title: The History and Description of the Great Western Railway, including its Geology…., and the antiquities of the district through which it passes; accompanied by a plan and section of the railway, a geological map, and by numerous views of its principal viaducts, bridges, tunnels, stations, and of the scenery and antiquities in its vicinity. ##### First edition, second issue; large folio; 15”x21”, 76 pp., including appendix. Lithographed pictorial title, dedication leaf and list of plates with vignette. 47 views and architectural details on 33 sheets, tissue guards, 2 hand-colored maps and geological cross-section at end. With the lithographed vignettes of Paddington Station at end of Preface and Bathampton Church at end of Appendix A, both on India paper. Rebound in modern dark brown crushed morocco, marbled endpapers, raised bands and gilt titles on spine. A monumental work, significant both for its depiction of early railway engineering and as an example of early lithography. The work was first published in 1843; purportedly the 1846 edition contains sheets from the first printing with an amended title-page, but we have been unable to confirm this information. Although the work is attributed to Bourne, the text was written by George Thomas Clark, an engineer and respected geologist, who worked on some of the lines and bridges illustrated. ##### CONDITION. Very good. Front hinge cracked, chip at bottom, but fully intact; dampstain to inner margin of fep, not affecting the facing title page. 1” closed tear at bottom of title page tape repaired. Similar small tape repair on dedication page. The plates are all very good-near fine with light toning to some of the margin edges and occasional faint image transfer to the facing paper guard. ##### SHIPPING: Included for domestic sales; added cost for international sales.
