Book Condition: Good
1st edition. 8vo, white pictorial boards. Silverstein’s first book; a collection of cartoons drawn for Stars and Stripes while P.F.C. Silverstein was stationed in Japan. In its now scarce original mailing box. ##### Condition: Good/Fair. The book is a clean, copy overall but for some reason the front end papers were used to score a bridge game. [see photo] Darkened on top edge and at spine ends from tarnishing of the staples in the box corners with some very light rubbing at spine ends; lightly cocked. The box was used to mail the book stateside in August 1955; inked mailing addresses and substantial scotch tape reinforcement on both sides. [The tape was used to reinforce the box for mailing; it is not damaged.] #####According to the Chicago Tribune, 1961, the recipient “Pete Christus Jr. of Boonville bought the champion ham at the Boone County Fair from … for $292.50 and is sending the ham to President John F. Kennedy.” Christus operated Pete’s Café at the Rocheport exit on Interstate 70. This clearly doesn’t increase the value of the book; just thought I’d share the provenance. ##### Note: the book was first issued, as here, without a dust jacket. The mailing box was replaced by a dustjacket in 1956.
