Concept drawing for the court jester, based upon real life actor Ned Sparks. Art is in black graphite with red and green details and highlights on thin manila paper. Numerous typed production notes. The film is a parody of Mother Goose nursery rhymes using caricatures of Hollywood celebrities of the 1930s. Rare to see anything from this production. ##### Fair condition. Considerable wear to edges with numerous chips and tears, but not affecting the image. Stamped W.D.P. at bottom right. Artist not identified. Date stamped November 1939; probably an archival reference since the film was released in 1938. ##### In the 1930s, Ned Sparks became known for portraying dour-faced, sarcastic, cigar-chomping characters. He became so associated with the type that, in 1936, The New York Times reported that Sparks had his face insured for $100,000 with Lloyd's of London. Purportedly, they agreed to pay the sum to any photographer who could capture Sparks smiling (Sparks later admitted that the story was a publicity stunt and he was only insured for $10,000).
