Stain at bottom edge, stretching up spine. 559 pp. Standard manual used by officers during the war. Covers military discipline, rank and command, succession in command, appointment and promotion, distribution of troops, care of fortifications, deceased officers and soldiers, deserters, discharges, travelling, arrests, forms, etc. Condition: Fair. Interior clean overall; page toning but very little foxing. . Ex-lib Universal Pictures Co., Inc. Research Dept. with the studio’s rubber stamp on title page, front and rear pastedowns, and several interior pages. Rear hinge cracked, front pastdown heavily stained and with penciled and inked signatures of Capt. James Thompson, dated 1862. Thompson served with the Army of West Virginia. At the age of 20 he fought with a portion of his artillery battery in the center of the confederate line on Coffman’s Hill, Battle of Tom’s Brook -- a significant victory for Union general George A. Custer.
