A scarce document of U.S. Naval History. Ex-lib Universal Pictures Co., Inc. Research Dept. with the studio’s rubber stamp on title page, front and rear pastedowns, bottom edge, and several interior pages. The copy of Lt. John Madigan, with his signature on fep, dated 1861. Madigan, of Damariscotta, Me, entered the naval service in February, 1840. During the Mexican-American war he served in the bomb-brig Vesuvius, and participated in the actions at Tuspan, Tobasco, and at the capture of the city of Vera Cruz. He was promoted to passed midshipman in July, 1846 and served in a coast survey from 1848 to 1850. He was commissioned as Lieutenant in 1855, and served in the steam sloop Mississippi in 1861. During the years 1862 and 1863 he commanded the iron-clad warship Patapsco, in the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron -- an improved version of USS Monitor equipped with a 15-inch Dahlgren gun in place of one of the 11-inch rifles. In 1864-5 he was commissioned as Commander. He died of heart failure in 1870.#####Condition: Fair. Text block is good. Clean and tight overall, with light toning to pages, occasional light foxing. Covers heavily worn, rubbed, leather on spine severely cracked with large chips at top and bottom.
