Printed by Charles Green Say, for J. Payne, London, 1754. Second edition. Four volumes. 12mo. (iv), 308p; (vi, 292p; (vi, 298p; (iv), 297p. The Adventurer was one of several 18th century English periodicals to publish the essays of Samuel Johnson. This 4-volume set contains all 140 numbers as in the first edition. Bound in contemporary calf, ribbed spine with gilt labels and double lined borders. 25 of the papers are attributed to Johnson, 70 to Hawkesworth. ##### Condition: Fair/Poor. The text blocks are clean and tight overall with only occasional light foxing; the only significant flaw is substantial toning/staining to title page margins and end papers. See photos. The covers are poor; substantial surface wear; leather dried and cracked; front covers partially detached, substantial chipping to lower front corners of volume 2.
