The "Manuals of the Corporation" [contain extensive historical and contemporary records of New York City and are an indispensable source of early New York City history. Valentine (1801-1869) served as the Deputy to the Clerk of the Common Council for thirty-seven years. He published these books annually between 1841-1866; they include detailed information on the meetings of the Aldermen Council, ordinances passed, public officials, the city's debts, directories of hospitals, alms houses and schools, ferry schedules, lists of public porters, demographics and census information, and descriptions of historic buildings and streets. This is the last of the original D.T. Valentine editions. Condition: Ex-libris Warner [Brothers] Research Collection Burbank Public Library, with pocket inside front cover, library ink stamp at bottom of title page and top edge. Except for having been rebound, condition is very good-near fine. We have sold a dozen of these manuals over the years and the text block and plates here are the best we have seen. Clean and tight with NO foxing. Maps and illustrations complete according to the "Index to the Illustrations in the Manuals of the Corporation of the City of New York", published by the Society of Iconophiles. Except for the ink stamp at bottom of the title page, all color plates are fine and undamaged. The two folding maps have several small tears with library repairs. Warner Brothers donated its research collection to the Burbank Public Library in 1975; because of budget cutbacks the library returned most of the collection to Warner Brothers in 1992. This volume was deaccessioned when Burbank closed the remainder of collection altogether in 1999.
