4to, first ed. Volume 2 only. 237 pages, with several to more than a dozen steel engravings on each. German publisher and author Johann Georg Heck published this 6-volume attempt to organize science, literature, and art in an accessible, graphic, format. He published this first English edition in 1851. Since that time it has become a standard of copyright free illustration and clipart worldwide, with millions of copies in print over the past 150 years. From the intro to the first volume, not present here: “Never before have the plates about sciences, arts, daily life, culture and war, nature and history, costumes and behavior have been printed so precisely and legibly." While the book is still in print, none of the modern editions have the clarity and quality of these original steel engravings. Volume 2 only. ##### Condition: A rebound copy. Text block in good+ condition overall -- mostly very good, but with occasional damp stain, spotting or foxing and with several pages showing repairs. Ink stamp of “United Costumers, Inc.” on title page, a Hollywood prop house that apparently used it for research and design. Modern green library binding, original marbled end papers bound in.
