Vol III No. 12. 8 pp., 9 1/2 x 11 3/4 in. Possibly the first American printing of the poem “Ode on Seeing a Negro Funeral"by Bryant Edwards, first published in Jamaica in 1792. The ode voices the imagined feelings of slaves as they accompany the body of Mahali to his burying place. They begin by rejoicing in his death as a release ‘from slav’r’s chain and restoration to his native Skies and long lost African homeland.” ##### Also an Article defending Aaron Burr by Aristides [pseudonym either of William Peter Van Ness. a friend of Aaron Burr wdho served as his second in his duel with Hamilton -- or possibly of John Rutherfurd, former Senator of New Jersey. ##### Condition: Fair; first and last pages nearly detached; edges frayed; moderate foxing throughout as well as spotting and several large stains, 1” open tear on last page, several smaller nicks throughout.
