1st ed., 8vo. publisher's embossed brown cloth with seal of New York on front and spine. [xiv], 912 pp. The first of a new series, enlarged, with new engravings and smaller type so that the book contains nearly double the aount of matter in forer compilations. Chromolith title page, 8 color plates [2 folding] and dozens of b/w illustrations, maps [several folding], and tables. Condition is fair: Text block is clean and tight overall with only very occasional foxing. Frontis fold-out map of New York is hand colored; larger b/w fold-out map is torn but intact. Oversized chromolith of Tammany Hall has several large tears but remains intact. Covers: Corners and extremities rubbed, front hinge partially cracked exteriorly only. Presentation inscription on fep from county supervisor Patrick Lysaght. Ex-lib Warner Bros Pictures Inc. research library, with studio label and pocket inside frontcover, Dewey numbers in black box on spine. The "Manuals of the Corporation" [contain extensive historical and contemporary records of New York City. D.T. Valentine (1801-1869) served as the Deputy to the Clerk of the Common Council for thirty-seven years. He published these books annually between 1841-1866; they include detailed information on the meetings of the Aldermen Council, ordinances passed, public officials, the city's debts, directories of hospitals, alms houses and schools, ferry schedules, lists of public porters, demographics and census information, and descriptions of historic buildings and streets. This is the first volume of the new series by his successor.
