1st ed., small 4to, marbled boards, gilt leather spine with 5 compartments. 2 volumes in one. 260 pp. [4] ; Atlas of plates [2] xxxix. An etymology of place names in the Nahuatl language and an analysis of the gylphs from the Codex Mendoza. Main title page printed in black and red; Atlas title is chromolithographed followed by 39 chromolithographed plates illustrating the glyphs for 462 place nahuatl names. Dr. Antonio Peñafiel (1830-1922) was the founder of the Natural History Society of Mexico and a member of a number of societies dedicated to the cultivation of human and social sciences. The Codex Mendoza is a sixteenth-century Aztec manuscript was created in Mexico City several years after the Spanish conquest. The codex was sent by ship to Spain, but the fleet was attacked in route by French privateers; the codex, along with the rest of the plundered items, was then taken to France. It is currently housed at the Bodleian Library. Condition: Good. Maint text is printed on news-pulp; typical browning; first 20 pages chipped at center of foredge; otherwise clean and tight. The Atlas of plates is printed on better quality paper and the plates are very good to fine. Covers rubbed on all extremities with moderate surface wear and sunning. Light wear to spine with some minor flaking. Endpapers soiled. A very attractive copy at this price.
