The scarce first edition of the definitive work on the art of decorating cakes with sugar. Signed, but not numbered in a limited edition of 5000 copies with an additional inscription on the facing page. 8vo, stamped pictorial brown boards with black and gilt titles. 775pp plus another 150pp of technical inserts and index. Text in Spanish. Profusely illustrated in b/w with photos and drawings, and including several foldout plans with double-sided illustration. Some color plates. This is an illustrated treatment of Mexican confectionary or sugar art, including candy confections and cake decorations. Fantastic detail and complexity - castles, houses, religious scenes, flowers, abstractions. Alvarado won many awards, founded the Mexican Art Institute of Sugar, and wrote other books on cake decorating, confectionary, and "sugar art". Includes recipes. Illustrations of techniques and finished products, plus many plans and templates. Only 2 copies of this first edition in OCLC. Near fine; a clean tight copy. Covers are fine; text block age-toned but not damaged. Only 5000 copies were printed. In very good d/w with edge wear, some mild creasing, age-toning, but no major flaws. Lacking the original three bound-in ribbon markers.
