Milano: Fratelli Treves, 1902. 1st ed., small 4to, handmade paper; pp. (16), 289, (7) illustrated in red and black with several full-page drawings and numerous ornaments throughout. Gilt ornament on front cover, gilt titles on spine; ribbon ties. Original full vellum binding [it was also published in cloth]. Text in Italian. A tragic play in verses, presented for the first time at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome on December 9th 1901. The text centers on the story of how Francesca da Rimini falls in love with her husband's brother in the 13th century. The play is based on an episode from Dante Alighieri's Inferno. It was written for D'Annunzio's lover Eleonora Duse, who played the title role. An English translation by Arthur Symons was published in 1902. D’Annunizio was an Italian writer, poet, journalist, and playwright. He occupied a prominent place in Italian literature from 1889 to 1910 and later political life from 1914 to 1924. Some of his ideas and aesthetics influenced the rise of Italian fascism. The vibrant decorations are by Adolfo De Carolis, an art nouveau/symbolist artist reminiscent of Walter Crane and William Morris. ##### CONDITION: Very good. The text block is fine; virtually pristine. The parchment covers are very good; light wear, a few small edge nicks, minor creasing at bottom of spine, front cover bowed.
