Book Condition: Very good
1st ed. thus. Small quarto. Black and tan decorated boards, black leather spine, printed label on front board, hand lettered label on spine. Illustrated with six full-color tipped-in plates and thirty-two in black & white, some of which have touches of color added -- also numerous smaller line drawings in sepia throughout. This is the first trade edition; there were also signed editions of 50 copies with an added hand-colored plate and 100 copies in green morocco. Printed by the Chiswick Press. Balfour is one of the lesser known masters of the period and his illustrations show the influence of predecessors and contemporaries such as Aubrey Beardsley, Harry Clarke, Leon Bakst and Alastair. CONDITION: Very good overall, but we have never seen a copy with these covers before -- leading us to believe this may be a rebound copy. If so, very well done. Covers: light surface wear, light rubbing to extremities; Text block: clean and bright; some discoloration to one of the rear end papers.
