1st ed., 8vo, original decorated green cloth, gilt decorations and lettering. 41 [2] i-xxxiii. Tipped in photographic frontispiece of “Wordsworth’s Glen.” [See note below] A talk about the Quantock Hills area of southwest England, where Coleridge and Wordsworth wrote Lyrical Ballads, which Nichols writes about the landscape as well as some of the other "Quantock Poets," including Charles Lamb, Thomas Lovell Beddoes and Charles Lloyd. Gift inscription on FFEP “with the writer’s compliments” to Welsh mathematician, photographer, and painter Rev. Calvert R. Jones, [1804-1877]. We believe Jones may have provided the frontispiece photo -- it is uncredited -- which would make this an especially appealing association copy. A mathematician, musician, painter and parson, Calvert Richard Jones was introduced to photography by a cousin of W.H.F. Talbot. In 1845 he travelled to Malta and Italy, returning with a collection of photographs that he sold his prints through Talbot’s gallery. Jones continued to make photographs while travelling and his work stands out in the early development of photography because of his ability to fuse his technical skill with the influence of his training as a watercolorist. . He was also one of the first members of the Photographic Society of London. Jones took up residence in Bath in 1858, increasing the likelihood that the uncredited frontis photo here may be his. According to the Getty Museum, “After 1856 Jones apparently gave up photography, although he continued to paint.” If we are correct and this is one of his photographs, it is probably one of the last photos he published. CONDITON: Good; covers lightly soiled, corners and spine lightly rubbed; hinges partly cracked. Text block is clean and tight with no defects other than an image transfer of the photographic frontis to the facing page.
