1st ed., first issue, second state,. 8vo black cloth. His third book of nonfiction, recounting the Harvard-Peabody Expedition to New Guinea to study one of the last stone-age tribes on the planet, which had been entirely free from contact with Westerners or the artifacts of industrial society. The book exists in three states. This first printing was withdrawn by the publisher prior to publication because the inset pages of photographs were bound in the wrong place and contrary to the Table of Contents (against the wishes of Matthiessen who oversaw the design.) Some copies were sent to reviewers with a mimeographed errata sheet informing them of the binding error. The rest of this first issue were sold to the Natural History Book Club, which tipped in a new contents page with the notation 'book club edition' at the bottom. This is a copy of the latter. A fine copy in near fine price-clipped d/w with very light edgewear. Signed in pale green ink on half-title.
