London: , 1726, 1727. Mixed first and second edition. Four parts in two volumes, as issued. Small 8vo. Vol. I is a first edition, but in the usual second state, with the inscription "Captain Lemuel Gulliver" on the oval and a Latin inscription on the tablet below, with continuous pagination throughout. Vol. II is the second edition, but a variant issue with "The Second Edition, Corrected" on the title-page and the facing page of advertisements, but with separate part pagination, indicating use of first edition sheets. Brown calf bindings; Vol I is smooth; Vol 2 has decorative blind ruled borders and center design. The spines of both volumes are uniform black labels, gilt titles, and five raised bands, suggesting Vol 1, even though a first edition, may have bound at the same time as Vol 2. Condition: Vol 1 - Poor: Joints and hinges severely cracked and partially detached; heavy rubbing, cracking overall, with chips out of top/bottom of spine. FEP stained with contemporaneous ink notation at top; title page browned with remnant of ink signature; balance of the text block is reasonably clean and tight with only light foxing. Vol II condition generally the same as Vol I except front cover fully detached and back joint and hinge, though cracked are still fully attached. Old rare book catalog entries glued onto front pastedown; contemporaneous ink inscription on fep, pencil erasure on verso. Damp staining to rear end papers and occasional pages within. The ink signatures on both volumes are identical indicating both volumes originally acquired at the same time. Sad shape, but the text blocks are suitable for rebinding.
