Serialized in volumes 3 and 4 of T.P.'s Weekly between 29 January and 7 October 1904, prior to its publication in book form by Harper & Brothers on 14 October 1904. The novel was only half complete when the serial began and was significantly revised prior to its final publication. T.P.'s Weekly was a publishing venture of T. P.
