5 Prospero Cahuantzi, editor.Lienzo de Tlaxcala, manuscrito pictorico mexicano de mediados del siglo XVI.
Mexico, D.F.: Libreria Anticuaria G.M. Ec, 1939. 11-1/2”x9-1/2”, quarter-leather two-post binding. 75 plates, printed in color on heavy stock including three foldout plates. 21 page prologue, 4 supplemental plates numbered A-D, frontispiece, and index sheet at rear. This is a reproduction of a 16th century Tlaxcala codex. The Lienzo de Tlaxcala uses detailed drawings to depict the time of contact and conflict between Hernando Cortez and various people groups in and around the Tlaxcala region of Mexico. It is comprised of images with accompanying headings in Nahuatl and captions in Spanish. Fine overall with some toning at binding edge of the prologue which is on lower quality paper. A near fine copy in good-only quarter-leather two-post binding. Small inked name of Betty Factor on title page. Factor, and her husband Monte, were significant collectors of contemporary art in Los Angeles and founders of several non-profit institutions there. Some light age toning at the edges of several plates, not affecting the images. Two of the fold-out plates have some tears at the folds and some staining. Covers: rubbed at edges and corners with some damp staining on lower right front cover, other smaller stains and soiling on rear. Large chips at top and bottom of spine. Unlike other codices published by this press, there is no indication of a limitation but there are only six copies in Worldcat. A seventh, deteriorated copy is at the Smithsonian Institution which is currently searching for someone to contribute $1500 to fund conservation efforts. You can save them the effort by purchasing this copy for less and donating it. The original codex is held at the University of Glasgow..

8 [Periodical] Wolfgang Paalen, editorDyn. [A Review of Art and Literature] Number 1, April-May 1942
Mexico: 1942. 52pp., 9 tipped in color plates; yellow/red decorated paper wrappers. DYN (derived from the Greek word κατὰ τὸ δυνατόν, that which is possible) was an art magazine founded by the Austrian-Mexican surrealist Wolfgang Paalen, published in Mexico City, and distributed in New York City, Paris, and London between 1942 and 1944. Only six issues were produced. In this first issue Paalen emphasized reexamines some of the fundamentals in surrealist theory and publicly announced his "farewell to surrealism." This issue also contains his groundbreaking essay The New Image, in which he tried to find criteria for true modernism in painting, which should have a "pre-figurative" essence and not stick to contents of the personal memory of the artist. Other contributions by Caroux, Dawson, Givors, Moro, Renouf, Sulzer. Fair: spine worn with several small cracks, chips. Covers fully detached, but intact; toned with soiling. Nicks to front foredge; Text block good+ with a few pages corner creased, some spotting to edge of fep. Ex-libris the Stendahl Art Gallery, Los Angeles. This volume was a well-used reference copy in the gallery’s reference library, hence the rough condition. Until its recent closure, the Stendahl Gallery was one of America's oldest continuously operating private art galleries. Art from the Stendahl collections found a home in The Louvre and many other major institutions throughout the world. Upon closing the gallery, the family donated a significant collection of photographs and documentation to the Getty Research Institute..
