Common Sense: or, Natural Ideas Opposed to Supernatural, d'Hohlbach, Baron
4 d'Hohlbach, BaronCommon Sense: or, Natural Ideas Opposed to Supernatural
8vo, full-calf, 204 pp. Paul-Henri Thiry, Baron d'Holbach (8 December 1723 – 21 January 1789) was a French-German author, philosopher, encyclopedist and a prominent figure in the French Enlightenment. He is best known for his atheism and for his voluminous writings against religion, the most famous of them being The System of Nature (1770), which presented a core of radical ideas that prompted the Catholic Church in France to threaten the crown with withdrawal of financial support unless it effectively suppressed the circulation of the book. The list of people writing refutations of the work was long. The Roman Catholic Church had its pre-eminent theologian Nicolas-Sylvestre Bergier write a refutation of the Système titled Examen du matérialisme (Materialism examined). Voltaire hastily seized his pen to refute the philosophy of the Système in the article "Dieu" in his Dictionnaire philosophique, while Frederick the Great also drew up an answer to it. Its principles are summed up in a more popular form in this present volume "Common Sense", which was first published in Amsterdam in 1772. This translation into English is the first American edition. Fair-Good: text block is clean and tight with light foxing throughout. Penciled marginalia on some pages. Front hinge is partially split. Covers heavily rubbed and chipped with 1-1/2" split at top and bottom of front spine. Pasted inside the front cover is a 19th century advertisement for another book entitled Common Sense, by John Meslier. While the condition is not great, the work is quite scarce..

Encyclopedia Ecclesiastica / Prompta Biblioteca, Ferris, F. Lucci
5 Ferris, F. LucciEncyclopedia Ecclesiastica / Prompta Biblioteca
Frankfuert: Apud Van Duren, 1784. The complete title is "Prompta Bibliotheca canonica, juridica, moralis, theologica, necnon ascetica, polemica, rubricistica, historica", an 8-volume encyclopedia of religious knowledge. The first edition of this work appeared at Bologna, in 1746. A second edition, much enlarged, also a third, were published by the author himself. The fourth edition, dating from 1763 seems to have been published after his death. This edition, 20 years later, contains the additions which the author had made to the second edition and also other enlargements (additiones ex aliena manu) inserted in their respective places in the body of the work (and no longer in the appendix as in the former editions) and supplements. Ferrari was an eighteenth-century canonist of the Franciscan Order. The exact dates of his birth and death are unknown, but he was born at Solero, near Alessandria in Northern Italy. He was also professor, provincial of his order, and consultor of the Holy Office. 8 volume set, each comprising approximately 700 pages. Good condition. Interior is very good-near fine: clean and tight with very little foxing. It was rebound, from appearances sometime in the late 19th century and the bindings show heavy edge wear and cracked spines. Marbled boards with cloth spines, to which the original ribbed-leather spines have been affixed. The book has recently been reprinted, but vintage volumes such as this are quite rare -- and complete sets especially so..

Sequel to the Kreutzer Sonata, Tolstoi, Count Lyof N. [Leo Tolstoy]
12 Tolstoi, Count Lyof N. [Leo Tolstoy]Sequel to the Kreutzer Sonata
NY: Thomas Crowell & Co, 1899. First separate American edition. Tan stapled wrappers with black lettering on front cover. 5"x7" inches. 16pp. This is a sequel to the original Kreutzer Sonata, originally published in 1889. An absolutely pristine copy. The publication of The Kreutzer Sonata set off an explosive debate in Europe, America, and Asia on matters that were then called the “sexual question” and the “woman problem.” These debates stirred widespread condemnation from all sides, as well as fervent admiration. The Kreutzer Sonata was censored or forbidden in some countries as “indecent literature.” In this sequel, Tolstoy repeatedly makes reference to verses from the Gospels as evidence supporting his views..
