Briggs’ classic work on the joys and frustrations of the sport, most of which had been previously published in the New York Herald-Tribune. Very good: Externally very clean with rubbed corners, edges; spine a bit loose; front hinge lightly cracked. Interior clean and bright with no foxing. Notoriously prone to wear, a very nice copy..

London: P. Emsly, 1790. Third edition. Two volume set, bound as one. Vol I - 223 pages. Vol II - 183 pages. Contemporaneous calf with gilt decoration and title to the spine. A book on chess strategy -- moves described with explanatory notes. With the Abbreviations and Subscriber List sometimes lacking. François-André Danican Philidor (1726 - 1795) was a French composer and regarded as the best chess player of his age. Text block is clean and tight with no foxing. Covers rubbed overall with extrernal crack at back hinge. Contemporaneous engraved bookplate of G.W.F. Gregor on front pastedown. Gregor was a sometime Esquire of Cornwall, and lord of the manor at Trewarthenick House..

Nevertheless a very attractive copy of an early gaming piece..
