San Francisco: A. Roman & Co, The first six annual volumes. Hardcover, green pebbled cloth, gilt titles and logo on spine. Each volume 550-600 pp. First appearance of Bret Harte's The Luck of Roaring Camp, as well as early contributions by Mark Twain and tales and poems by California Bohemian founders Charles Warren Stoddard and Ina Coolbrith. Among the tales and articles in this short run are Harte's "The Luck of Roaring Camp," "Dickens in Camp," and "Plain Language from Truthful James," and Ambrose Bierce's "The Haunted Valley" and "Grizzly Papers," Mark Twain is represented by four travel logs that ultimately formed the basis for A Tramp Abroad. Numerous works by Stoddard and Coolbrith. NOTE: Volume 2 is not hard-bound; it is bound in original green printed wrappers with black buckram spine and in fair condition only: moderate wear, hand-printed paper label attached to spine, moderate edgewear with ¼ cut at lower of back wrapper; internally very good as with other volumes..

Slavery, Freedom, and Ghosts in the Hudson River Valley - a mixture of fact and fable. Good. Rubbed at top bottom of spine, corners; bits of newspaper residue on back cover. Newspaper obituaries of Bailey glued to front end papers. Some damp-staining to flyleaf page with tipped portrait but not affecting the photo. Front hinge weak but intact. Text block otherwise clean and tight with no foxing..

London: for R. and J. Dodsley in Pall Mall, 1760. Two 8vo volumes. pp. [8], xii, 324; xii, 308; 2 folding maps The third edition with improvements. [First published 1757.] Speckled calf, gilt borders and titles, five raised bands on spine. Joints and hinges cracked; edge and corner wear, latter rubbed and bumped; moderate surface wear overall; original titles between top two bands have been replaced with paper labels, cracked. Pastedowns and end paper age-toned; overall text block is clean and tight. Binding, though contemporaneous, does not appear to be original. The author(s) are uncertain, but generally believed to have been William and Richard Burke (cousin and brother of Edmund Burke to whom the work is sometimes attributed.) Folding maps in each volume by Emanuel Bowen are general maps of North and South America..

[Published earlier that year in an exceedingly rare 4to format] This definitive collection of Franklin essays, many printed here for the first time, is the only edition of Franklin's political and philosophical writings printed during his lifetime. The collection was edited by his friend Benjamin Vaughan with Franklin's knowledge and consent, and contains an 'errata' [Addenda & Corrigenda] made by him for it. Published in London while Franklin was serving as America's ambassador, the work includes many of his writings on the colonial rebellion and British measures leading up to it. Lacking the portrait frontispiece portrait prepared for the 4to edition and found in some copies of the 8vo but with the three scientific plates (one folding), and folding table. Good+:Front hinge lightly cracked, end papers soiled; 19th century bookseller seal [T. Connlly - Dublin] on front pastedown. Light-moderate wear overall with rubbing to spine and extremities. Text block and plates clean and tight with light scattered foxing, An extremely good copy overall. [Ford 342. Howes F330. Sabin 25565.].
