[Freeman no. 938 with page height of 190, board height of 195, and books by same author on verso of title leaf of Vol. 2; the first volume starts with "When" on p. 297 and no errata on verso of title page.] With the publisher's ads dated January 1871 present in both volumes. Vol 1. viii, 423pp + 16pp. advts. Vol 2: viii, [2], 475 (16 pp. advts.] Fair-Good-minus: light surface and edge wear to covers overall; Hinges cracked both volumes but still intact; corners lightly rubbed and bumped (substantial bump to lower front corner Vol 2. Vol 1 is lightly cocked to right with 1" tear to FEP and inked name on front flyleaf. Half-title and advts in Vol 2 lightly foxed, otherwise text blocks of both vols are clean and tight with little to no foxing..

[Freeman no. 377] Good: several small chips at top and bottom of spine; light 1/2" damp-stain along upper fore-edge of front cover; spine titles lightly faded; corners rubbed; front hinge partially split but still intact; contemporaneous penciled signature on FEP; damp-stain at top of rear end papers and several small damp-stains on fore-edge. Text block is generally clean and tight with practically no foxing. From approximately mid-point to end there is some very light damp-stain to top of pages..
