Original Leaf from the Polycronicon Printed by William Caxton at Westminster in the Year 1482. The Life and Works of William Caxton, with an historical reminder of fifteenth century England by Benjamin P Kurtz, together with a Note on the Polycronicon by Oscar Lewis & and Appreciation of William Caxton by Edwin Grabhorn, Caxton, William
1 Caxton, WilliamOriginal Leaf from the Polycronicon Printed by William Caxton at Westminster in the Year 1482. The Life and Works of William Caxton, with an historical reminder of fifteenth century England by Benjamin P Kurtz, together with a Note on the Polycronicon by Oscar Lewis & and Appreciation of William Caxton by Edwin Grabhorn
, San Francisco: Grabhorn Press, 1938. 1st thus., Near Fine.. Quarto. 53pp. One of 297 copies printed for the Book Club of California by Edwin and Robert Grabhorn. Quarter cloth and maroon paper boards with Caxton's printers device in black to both boards. Paper label with black text to spine. Fore edge and bottom edge untrimmed. An unusual mixed set. This copy ex-libris the Bancroft Library with its blind-stamp and an inkstamped “withdrawn” notice [dated 1989] on the last leaf. The BCC published this homage to Caxton with an original leaf from the Polycronican tipped-in following the title page. That leaf is missing and a penciled note, dated 1939, states that the leaf had been removed before the Bancroft received it -- apparently a gift from Alfred Bender, Chairman of the BCC Publication Committee. [The rear endpaper appears to have Bender’s gift inscription but it was very carefully bleached out.] A subsequent owner purchased a substitute leaf from the original Polycronican in 1999 for a cost of $700 and that leaf is now laid in. This leaf is a sound copy but with several worm holes in bottom left corner, not affecting the text, and several contemporaneous inked notations in the margins. Except for the original leaf having been removed and replaced and Bender’s bleached inscription, the book is in near fine condition with only scant surface wear. Also laid in is the original BCC prospectus for the work and several pieces of related ephemera. $1025.

[Unique and Hard to Find Rare Books With Historical Notes To Distinguish the Different Editions, And Their Value In The Trade.]
Avigon et Lyon, Seguin et chez l’auteur, 1777. 12mo, full vellum. 207 pp. An early guide to rare-book collecting; a priced-catalog of books sold by Jean-François de Los Rios, with annotations. de Los Rios (1727-1820) was a noted bookseller in Lyon, famously taking advantage of the dispersion of Jesuit libraries after the order was expelled from France in 1764. The Bibliographie instructive was one of his early works, published after more than 17 years as a bookseller in Lyon. The bilbiografía is organized as a directory with 639 entries briefly discussed and 190 references in the included supplement. The entries are organized thematically. Los-Rios also offered an "index auctorum" to facilitate locating the names and titles. A scarce early work on the trade. Covers soiled and slightly cocked; edges discolored; corners bumped. Contemporary inked inscription inside front cover. Interior clean and tight with some light toning but no foxing. $500.
