San Francisco: A. Roman & Co, The first six annual volumes. Hardcover, green pebbled cloth, gilt titles and logo on spine. Each volume 550-600 pp. First appearance of Bret Harte's The Luck of Roaring Camp, as well as early contributions by Mark Twain and tales and poems by California Bohemian founders Charles Warren Stoddard and Ina Coolbrith. Among the tales and articles in this short run are Harte's "The Luck of Roaring Camp," "Dickens in Camp," and "Plain Language from Truthful James," and Ambrose Bierce's "The Haunted Valley" and "Grizzly Papers," Mark Twain is represented by four travel logs that ultimately formed the basis for A Tramp Abroad. Numerous works by Stoddard and Coolbrith. NOTE: Volume 2 is not hard-bound; it is bound in original green printed wrappers with black buckram spine and in fair condition only: moderate wear, hand-printed paper label attached to spine, moderate edgewear with ¼ cut at lower of back wrapper; internally very good as with other volumes..

Fremont's attempt to bring a brass cannon from the Mississippi River to California. The effort failed and the cannon has been lost to history. The prevalent theories at that the cannon was buried somewhere on the east slope of the Sierra Nevadas and never found or that the cannon was dug-up by Native Americans and dumped into one of the deep remote canyons found on the eastern slopes of the Sierras. New copy; book is pristine but it has been in storage and the d/w has some light soiling, light shelf-wear along edges, and a few age spots..
